Florentine Schiacciata whatever it is : Origins
The origins f this Tuscan dessert date back to the 19th century and Artusi discusses it in his book where he presents the savory version with cracklings pieces of pork fat and the sweet version prepared during the Carnival period.
Originally, the Nuns of the Murate Monastery in Florence who produced the dessert in rectangular baking pans also renamed it ” La Schiacciata delle Murate !” . This dessert was prepared on Sheove Tuesday to celebrate the last of Carnival
It seems that after the Murate Monastery was transformed from a convent into a prison the dessert was prepared and given to those condemned to death
